Retirement and New Beginnings
July 18, 2006 marked my official retirement at the age of 65. However, I extended my career for an additional six months to facilitate a smooth transition to the outsourcing firm taking over the IT role.
Real Estate Ventures
After a decade, I sold my two-bedroom flat in Mitcham, originally purchased for £71,000, at a profitable £172,000. Later that year, I returned to Southport and invested in a quaint two-up-two-down in Hillside, dedicating time to its renovation and furnishing.
Charitable Engagements
In 2009, an opportunity arose through a local newspaper advert from Sefton Council for Voluntary Services (Sefton CVS), seeking individuals interested in becoming charity trustees. I submitted my CV and soon became a Trustee and Director of Sefton CVS, a role I proudly hold to this day.
Military Associations and Community Service
That same year, I joined the Veterans Fund as secretary, contributing to the organization of the Southport Armed Forces Weekend and Carnival. By 2011, the Veterans Fund had evolved into a registered charity.
My commitment to military associations continued as I rejoined the Royal Air Forces Association, eventually becoming Chairman and Trustee of the Formby Branch in 2017. We commemorated the centenary of the Royal Air Force with a special event at Botanic Gardens the following year.
Leadership and Legacy
Transitioning from the Veterans Fund, I took on roles within the Southport Branch of the Royal British Legion, culminating in positions as Vice-Chairman and Treasurer by 2012. My dedication to service persisted with SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity, where I served as a press officer and fundraiser, and later with Veterans in Sefton as a volunteer.
Southport Armed Forces Day
In 2015, I spearheaded the Southport Armed Forces Day after Sefton Council’s decision not to continue the event. The event grew in success, leading to its relocation to accommodate larger crowds. However, after eight years, I passed the torch due to health considerations.
Continuing Service
As of 2024, I have consistently participated in every Southport Armed Forces Day and Remembrance Sunday, honoring our service members and their sacrifices.
